Lets face it Indians fans, the Tribes bull-pen is in some serious trouble these days. It was only a day or 2 ago, that Indians set-up man Vinnie Pestano said, “I will right this ship” on twitter. Little did Pestano know, he would be moved into the Indians closer spot.
Today when the Indians placed Chris Perez on the disabled list, it only made sense to move major league baseball’s best set-up man into closers position. Perez was placed on the D.L. because of a sore right shoulder.
Perez had trouble with his shoulder since spring training. The Indians have had trouble closing ball games for the past week. The Tribe has lost the lead in late innings and Perez pitching, has been reason.
The one time solid pitcher could have tried to do too much for the Indians. He could have had shoulder problems throughout the 2013 season and he could have kept it to himself.
Now that he is being placed on the 15 day disabled list and the Indians have fallen out of first place in the A.L. Central, the Indians made the move they probably should have made a while ago. They moved Pestano into the closing spot.
Pestano should do a good job in his new role with the ball club. The guy brings a giant amount of intensity to the mound once those bull-pen gates open. If Pestano can pitch as well as he did as the Indians set up man over the past couple of seasons, the Indians should be able to ride out this storm.
One thing the Indians have to be concerned about is the health of Pestano’s throwing elbow. He had Tommy John surgery before coming to the Cleveland Indians and he too was in the 15 day disabled list earlier this season. It is going to be nerve-racking for the Indians and their fans if Pestano can’t perform in his new role.
But if he handles it well and doesn’t miss a beat, the Indians just might have found their closer of the future. I’ll bet Pestano does a great job as the Indians closer…
