Rumor has it the Cleveland Browns and Chip Kelly have come to terms to bring Kelly into the Cleveland Browns organization as the teams next head coach. The Contract hasn’t been sign as of yet and Kelly wants to make sure that it is going to be a great fit before he commits. The only thing that could stop Kelly from coming to the Cleveland Browns would be him saying he can’t leave Oregon. Kelly and the Cleveland Browns met for hours today. According to Kelly’s agent he canceled all other interviews.
This means the Cleveland Browns will be bringing in a head coach that has no NFL experience. When was the last time a guy came from the college ranks with no head coaching experience in the NFL and was able to win? We are going to have to check the record books for that one. People may want to answer it with Jim Harbaugh and they would be correct, the difference is Harbaugh had a tron of NFL experience as an NFL quarterback.
The deal is 95% done, Chip Kelly should be the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns. All that needs to be done us fir him to sign the papers. This could very well be the end of Brandon Weeden in Cleveland. The Chances of Weeden being successful in the run option offense is slim and none. As a matter of fact Weeden said he couldn’t do it last Monday….

Good bye Colt McCoy as well…hello Alex Smith, or welcome to the Thaddius Lewis era…hahaha….!
I seriously doubt that. Colt McCoy is the guy who could run the Chip Lewis Offense the best out of all three guys….
Colt Mckoy ran the run option offense at Texas.
of course the NFL is different, but Browns have all the peices to run it.
So Chip Kelly & Colt McCoy have the same agent. Go figure. I believe this was in the works for a while now which probably explains why McCoy did not play the last game against the Steelers. Sore shoulder for McCoy? Ummmm. Guessing Haslam & Banner wanted McCoy far away from Shurmur after his disaster injury-prone last quarter with Denver. Haslam & Banner probably saw first-hand how stubborn Shurmur had it out for McCoy. Explains why Shurmur sacrificed the team winning games for training Weeden who was definitely not ready to be a starter in the NFL. LG – Do you think now McCoy was never traded last summer because Jimmy saw him in his future plans? I do because I could never understand why Colt did not ask to be traded after how the last regime treated him.
Small World don’t ya think Bob? I hear it is even getting smaller for Brandon Weeden, now he is tweeting he was just kidding about not being able to run the Chip Kelly Offense. I think the last laugh might be on him….
I just saw that tweet. What a goof! But then again, he’s always been a goof in front of the media. Remember all those games when he said he did well and then retracted a day or so later? I think Weeden should go with Shumur to KC with Reid and KC gives the Browns Bowes – ha! ha! – I wonder how Hillis would feel (probably demand a trade). I hear Wes Welker even has the same agent as McCoy & Kelly. Wonder if Haslam & Banner go after Welker since he may be a free agent. Browns do need a veteran WR leader to add that “star” spark.
Whatever the Browns do, I hope they do it all in a month or two so the team knows where they all basically stand day 1 of camp. Stability without controversy (McCoy vs. Weeden, Shurmur vs. players that are upset with him, etc… ) is important.
I agree with you Bob, Weeden is a goof and he is going to be out of here too….. http://clevelandsports360.com/wordpress/jimmy-donovan-calls-in-from-arizona-to-say-colt-mccoy-fits-the-chip-kelly-offense-not-brandon-weeden/
Keep writing the good articles LG.
Thanks Bob
If you look back through the Articles I have written I said, “Haslam Really Likes Colt McCoy”…
Recently, there are 3 former college head coaches who appear to be succeeding in the NFL — Carroll at Seattle and Schiano at Tampa Bay in addition to Harbaugh at San Francisco.
Here’s a link with some positive thoughts on hiring a successful college coach in the NFL –
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.: Sam Mellinger: College coaches thrive in NFL – Football Wires – MiamiHerald.com
http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/01/03/31...
The most successful transition that I know about is Jimmy Johnson who won multiple National Championships at Miami before he was recruited as the Cowboys’ head coach in 1989 where he rebuilt the team from the ground up and led them to two Super Bowl victories within 5 years.
During the last 30 years or so, there were more college head coaches who failed in the NFL than succeeded when you look at the flashy head coach to head coach hires.
However, when you look at a majority of the Hall of Fame coaches and the widely respected current coaches there is a very different story.
Lots of great coaches spent time as college assistants and occasionally head coaches before they took assistant coaching jobs in the NFL and worked up from there.
Here is a list of coaches who made good use of college experience in their path to NFL coaching greatness — Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh, Don Shula, John Madden, Don Coryell, Paul Brown, Sid Gilman, Joe Gibbs, Marv Levy, Hank Stram, George Allen, Bill Parcells, Tony Dungy, and Sean Payton.
Finally, it’s not where a coach gets his experience and learns coaching. It’s the leadership, creativity, motivational skills and football as well as management IQ a coach possesses that makes the difference between his success or failure.
An interesting note for Browns fans: Paul Brown, like Jimmy Johnson, coached Ohio State to its first National Championship before he became the first head coach and part owner of the Cleveland Browns and later the Cincinnati Bengals. Brown, Johnson, and Barry Switzer are the only coaches who have won national championships in both college and pro football.

If Kelly is reeled in by the Browns, Weeden will become trade bait. His talents are not well-suited for the fast-paced speed offense that will be installed by Kelly.
Colt McCoy ran a very similar form of this offense at Texas and has the speed needed to run it. I believe that Banner and Haslam are quite fond of McCoy and the attributes that he brings to the table in terms of team leadership. The fact that they are entertaining the notion of Chip Kelly says volumes of how much they disliked the direction that Shurmur was taking the team with Weeden and not McCoy.
If Kelly is hired, it would be a great opportunity to get a quarterback in the draft “on the cheap” who would fit well in this offense. Geno Smith of West Virginia is one who would mold well with this offensive system and will probably be available late in the draft because of how the Mountaineers sort of imploded this past season.
Thaddeus Lewis is not going to be anything more than what he has been in Cleveland…a third-string or practice-squad quarterback. He just doesn’t have the skill set necessary to be more than that in the NFL.
Banner has already stated that Colt McCoy is in the New Coaches plans…..It is going to be interesting to see what happens to Weeden…..
You gotta be kidding me. Worst move ever. Chip is going to be a miserable failure. He has such limited experience, only 4 seasons as a head coach for a major organization. No NFL experience, and wants total control over personnel decisions. He has no experience and is going to fail miserably.
Please please get Lovie Smith.
OK so it may not be so bad based on how wrong I was about Weeden.
Please god let me be wrong.
Bobby D, Did you know that Kelly helped Belichick super charge the Patriots offense this season? Belichick was so impressed that he flew out to Oregon and met with Kelly and we all saw how many points the Patriots scored this season… I say lets give him a chance and see how he can adapt his offensive schemes to the NFL. There were lots of great College coaches that came to the NFL without experience in the past……. Jimmy Johnson, Paul Brown just to name a few…..
I guess many Brown fans can never be satisfied. You wanted Shumur gone and we all know how bad of a coach he was. He provided no leadership for the team and played a guessing game with his offensive calling. Set a rookie QB in who was a carbon copy of himself, no leadership and played scared many times on the field. Now we have a prospect for the Brown’s coaching who we all know provides leadership qualities, plays and coaches intelligently, has a winning record and many of you are complaining. What do you want? Just because you want NFL experience does not give you great coaching. You must look at the quality and characteristics behind the coach.
KC you are exactly right. Many Coaches had to start somewhere. I like Kelly’s work ethics and his determination to get those wins. I think he could be just the type of coach the Browns need. Besides the guy is an innovator and he can think outside the box. He is the kind of coach that will be able to figure it out. Something Shurmur had no clue about…..
It doesn’t matter where a coach comes from. It’s how good a coach he is.
There are many things that recommend Kelly, including what his players say about him. After the Fiesta Bowl, some of the Oregon players were asked how they felt about Kelly and the chance he’d go to the NFL. Here’s an endorsement from the Ducks QB –
“”We’ll have to see,” quarterback Marcus Mariota said. ”Whatever he decides to do, we’re all behind him. He’s an unbelievable coach. He’s not only a football coach, but he’s someone that you can look to and learn a lot of life lessons from. Whatever happens, happens. But we’re all behind him.”
We certainly haven’t heard this kind of praise from players about any Browns head coach recently.
I think our players have been mostly self-motivated, without much faith in the head coach, his game plans, or his decisions.
If Chip Kelly comes here, I believe we’ll see a motivational transformation in this team that will amaze long-suffering Browns fans.
He may succeed. He may not. I will leave you with another “can’t miss” college coach that came to the NFL – Butch Davis.
How do you explain Jim Harbaugh taking the 49ers to the playoffs the first year he coached in the NFL? He even started when Shurmur did so in other words both Harbaugh & Shurmur had basically no training camp their first year. How about Tom Coughlin? Or even Jimmy Johnson? Or how Kelly helped Tom Coughlin of the Patriots this year?
You saw how Shurmur who had no head coaching experience but plenty of NFL experience.
Point – It depends on the man, his plan, his leadership, his personality and the team around him and the ownership who seems now to do what it takes to bring a winning team to Cleveland. I bet the Browns get some valuable free agency pick ups (Bowes, Welker?). From what I read about Kelly, he does make adjustments for what the players can do rather then force a system unlike Shurmur.
I’ll tell ya one thing Bob, it took me about 2 snaps of seeing how bad Weeden sucked in preseason before I made a judgement call. These people are already downing Chip Kelly before he even gets here…..There were lots of guys that found success coming to the NFL ABrown replied with a whole list of guys including Paul Brown….
My bad. Meant to say Belichick of the Patriots.
If h&b are wrong about Kelly and the browns fail the backlash from. The fans will be very ugly
I’m not saying he is gonna fail. It remains to be seen how he will do. The NFL is different than college. Some do well, some don’t.
Is it hard to believe some people are predicting failure prior to his getting here? Yes it is. It is also hard to believe that people are claiming him to be the second coming even before he gets here. We’ve yet to see who his coaching staff will be. Will we be running a 4-3 or 3-4 on defense. What will his approach be on defense. Will he settle on McCoy as QB, or will Lewis be given a chance. Lewis was more impressive than both Weeden and McCoy. Or will the Browns bring in a Michael Vick or a Tim Tebow?
Why did Nick Saban fail in his first attempt at the pros? His work ethic is no less than that of Kelly. Alot of college coaches fail in the pros, imho, is because they were great motivators in college. Great motivators in the college ranks don’t necessary translate into successful NFL coaches. In the NFL it’s more about talent and less about motivation.
I hope he succeeds. I would like to see a Browns win the Superbowl before I go meet my maker. I am hopefully optimistic, but I remember that last “great white hope” to come from the college ranks to save Cleveland football, and that didn’t work out too well.
Come on, guys. You’re already passing judgment on Kelly (or anybody else) before they’ve done anything in the NFL. Give the Browns’ brass a little lee-way to make the best decision for the team. It looks like they are trying to make a selection based upon the current team makeup and not trying to completely blow up the team. That’s a good thing in my opinion.
At least Banner and Haslam do see hope with the core of the current team. As I’ve said previously, there are certain areas that need to be addressed to make this a really good team. Those needs can be met through the draft and through free agency in pretty short order. With that, this team can be turned into a playoff contender by next season in what is quickly becoming an aging and fairly weak AFC North division.
