According to a recent article, by SI, Johnny Manziel may not become a resident of Ohio. The article I read was saying Manziel might not become a resident to avoid the states income tax. No don’t get me wrong, Manziel will have to still pay some taxes to the state of Ohio.
He will avoid additional taxes on his endorsement deals by not becoming a resident in Ohio. Manziel, could make more money on those deals than he does as a member of the Cleveland Browns. Reportedly, Manziel is in line to earn somewhere in the area of $4,738,000 this year.
If he does earn that much with the Browns, he would pay the state approximately $278,000 this year. Imagine, this kid comes out of college and makes more money than some will make in a life-time and he is already looking for a way to hold onto most of it.
If Manziel, remains a resident of the state of Texas, he will completely avoid an Ohio tax on his other deals. That could add up to a substantial savings. Had Manziel been drafted by another team, lets say in a state that doesn’t have a income tax, he might have not even given it a second thought about becoming a resident.
