Sixteen turnovers. Sixteen. That was one of the ugly numbers from the Ohio State men’s basketball team’s trip to Illinois on Saturday afternoon when they lost 74-55.
The Buckeyes played lazy, heartless basketball for most of the game while the Illini fought hard. In the first half, Ohio State had nine turnovers, making for more turnovers than made field goals. Deshaun Thomas led the Buckeyes with 24 points, who as a team shot just 33 percent for the game. It seems the Buckeyes are having a really difficult time finding someone to consistently score for them. And when they aren’t scoring, they get frustrated and give up on defense.
It is safe to say that Ohio State has some soul searching to do if it wants to be competitive the rest of the Big Ten season. And they better do it fast. Up next is Purdue in West Lafayette on Tuesday night, and the Boilermakers are coming off of a win against the Illini.
