Cleveland Indian pitcher Justin Masterson made the announcement, Chris Perez will no longer be the closer for the Cleveland Indians who are still trying to win the wild card spot. Perez almost blew the game for the Tribe last night in Minnesota.
The Indians had a 5 run lead before Perez gave up 4 runs and Indians skipper pulled him from the game. Francona said, Perez stuck his head in his office door after his poor performance last night and said he didn't want to cost the Indians a play off spot.
As for who the Indians will use to close, that is anyone's guess. Masterson will remain in the Bull-pen and he said the Indians would close by committee. The Indians used Masterson to close in their last home game of the regular season at Progressive Field Wednesday night and he performed beautifully as the closer.
Perez has been troubled all season, first it was a shoulder injury, then it was his run in with the law for having a shipment of marijuana to his home. Perez was never the same after that embarrassment.
Last night was the final blow for the Indians, they knew they had to do something with Perez and you could see it all over Francona's face after the game. How long Perez will remain in the Indians Bull-Pen is also a good question.
He has been the Indians closer for the past few seasons and has done a great job up to now. But, if Perez can't close for the Indians they simply don't need him on their roster. This could be the last season we see Chris Perez in a Indians uniform.
