Where would guys like Cleveland Browns safety, Donte Whitener be if it weren’t for guys like Ted Ginn Sr? Whitner grew up on the east side of the City of Cleveland. As a youth, many of these kids end up on the wrong side of the law, some even end up being killed.

That didn’t happen to Donte Whitner. He was one of the lucky ones, one of the guys who had a coach by the name of Ted Ginn Sr. come into his life. Whitner played football under Ginn Sr. Not only did Whitner excel as a football player, he was one of the hundreds, if not thousands of guys Ginn Sr. would see go to college.

Ginn Sr. has a way of getting into his players hearts. He is a man who goes out of his way to make sure his high-school football players, learn to read, write and extend their education. He would load his bus up and hit the road with these guys, taking them to colleges to get them scholarships.

When the Ginn Academy, picked Cleveland Browns safety Donte Whitner to deliver their commencement address, they picked one of the winners from the neighborhood. They picked a guy who is a proven winner, a guy that showed you can come from the neighborhood and make it out.

Whitner has a tattoo on forearm that reads, “Thank God for Ginn.”

How many players in the NFL have their high school coaches name tattooed on their forearm? That’s how much Ginn Sr. means to Donte Whitner. Now it was his turn to do something for Ginn.

Whitner not only delivered a great commencement address, that brought some to tears, he reached into his pocket and donated a check for $50,000.00 to the Ginn Academy.

What a home-coming it is for the city of Cleveland to have Donte Whitner back. This guy is a difference maker, and he remembers where he came from. No his old coach can say, Thank God for Whitmer!!!

L.G. Thanks for a great, and I might add extremely well written article. Oftentimes we don’t get the opportunity to thank those who have meant so much to us. I was glad when Donte came to the Browns simply because he was an ex-Buckeye. Now, thanks to your article, I have an insight to what he means to the youth of the community, and to all of us. He’s gone to the top of the list as one of my favorite current Browns players. God bless all of us for Donte, and for L.G. for sharing his story with us. Blessings
