Today is the day the Cleveland Browns rookies from the 2013 NFL draft class report to Berea to start practicing as a professional football player. The drafted rookies and the UN-drafted free agents will report to practice today. Some think this is the first chance for the Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton to start transitioning the teams first pick Barkevious Mingo, into an outside linebacker.
The Browns had their eyes on this kid who likes to eat quarterbacks for the entire month of April. The team was barking for the chance to get this guy. He is quick and it will be interesting to see if he can have the same kind of success int the NFL as he had at L.S.U.
Mingo should give the Browns an outside linebacker who can both rush the passer and play in space with his speed. The Browns who are making the switch to the 3-4 defense this season are going to need a solid group of line-backers. They should have them with the addition of Mingo and some of the free agents they signed.
Mingo has the opportunity to make a big splash in the NFL. No one player in the Browns defense stands out as a solid pass rusher now. They have some guys who certainly should have been able to make a bigger splash in getting to the quarterback, but that didn't happen last season.
When Mingo gets to play along side a guy like D'Qwell Jackson, he should be able to pick up the position quickly. This is going to be a weekend of learning not only for the rookies who are reporting, but for Rob Chudzinski who is heading his first rookie mini camp as a head coach in the NFL.
