When the Cleveland Browns hired G.M. Michael Lombardi, the fans thought here we go again. They could be right. One look at the Browns offensive line on a running play clearly shows the team lacks lead blockers.

The Browns went out a resigned running back Jamaine Cook after Dion Lewis went down with a broken leg. What is Cook going to do to improve the Browns running game? Lombardi should have wnet out and signed free agent Lawrence Vickers who has years opening holes for running backs.

The last time the Browns had a running back that rushed for over 1,000 yard in the season, it was Vickers leading the way. Now with the Browns already having injuries to the key positions on the offensive line, the run blocking could suffer more.

Vickers is a blue-collar player who gets the job done. The Browns should bring Vickers back as an insurance policy for their former number one pick Trent Richardson. Vickers is a NFL veteran who knows how to open holes.

The Browns are passing a golden opportunity to bring in a guy at a discounted rate that could help the team with their running game. Vickers not only opens holes for running backs he is a valuable outlet receiver with great hands coming out of the backfield.

Vickers never puts the ball on the ground. If Lombardi is going to help the Browns, he should start by signing someone who can open holes for the running back. Vickers is that guy and the Browns know it.

The team should bring in Lawrence Vickers and  they should do it now before someone else picks up the free agent.

    LG, You’re clueless as usual.

What are you talking about Rick. Vickers is a guy that would be a positive for the Browns.

      • James

Vickers blocks…that is all. We need someone who can run and get open on third down. Quit dissing on a hometown kid.

        • LG

James maybe you don’t realize it but Vickers can catch the ball coming out of the backfield very nicely….

        • Paul

That’s what we need If we can line up Vickers in front of Trent. All our problems are solved.

LG, he’s past his prime and doesn’t fit into the offensive scheme. He also doesn’t have good hands.

Chuck what are you talking about doesn’t have good hands? He saved Romo’s ass on a few occasions last season.

I usually don’t agree with LG on much of anything, but he is completely right on this one. the running game has not been the same since the Browns got rid of Vickers. if he is available, he definitely should be brought in. at the very least, he would be a definite improvement over Owen Marecic

    • RICK

Anyone is an improvement over Marecic LOL

I think you are missing a few things here. One, didn’t Vickers just have back surgery? Two, who is supposed to replace Dion Lewis then? Three, isn’t Ogbonnaya doing a pretty good job anyways? Or am I not watching the same preseason games you are? He looked like he understood leverage, pad shelf, angles, had good explosion off the snap, and can not only block but also run and catch the ball.

    • LG

It was very minor back surgery and he is set to go. Ogbonnaya is Ok but lets face it, he isn’t the same caliber as a Lawrence Vickers,

How about picking up Michael Turner??

    • LG

We need a full back that can open up holes for T-Rich. Vickers is best suited for that task…

Vickers is 30 years old and past the max age range of 26 to 28 that Joe Banner & Lombardi have established for acquiring new players.

Their emphasis is primarily on rebuilding the team for the future and not so much on who can help this year.

    • LG

Time for them to reconsider their prime age. They just named a guy soon to be 30 their starter

I COULDN’T AGREE WITH YOU MORE, PAYTON HILLIS HAS NEVER ACHIEVED MUCH SINCE LEAVING BROWNS AND VICKERS,. THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES..THERE IS NO DOUBT RICHARDSON WOULD REAP MUCH MORE YARDS WITH VICKERS LEADING THE WAY…HOPE LOMBARDY WAKES UP AND REALIZES THE VALUE VICKERS COULD AD TO THE TEAM…..CAN’T WAIT TOO LONG ANOTHER TEAM WILL GRAB HIM SOON…………………………..NINO

don’t agree with LG on much but i think he is on point with this. sad seeing Lewis go down as he was going to complement Richardson well. Can we expect Jackson to step up into that role? he looks like a decent hands guy but we have Ogbonnaya in that role. Just don’t want to see the typical going to the well to often handoff to ONLY Richardson as he’ll surely wear down

You make a solid point that the browns do need an improvement at the fullback position. The problem with your idea of Vickers is that he trashed Cleveland when he left, he’s a terrible teammate, and at 30 as a fullback there is no such thing as a ” minor ” back surgery. Lastly if u are saying Lombardi is screwing up because he isnt signing the right fullback you sound like someone just looking for a reason to not like Lombardi.

    • LG

People don’t need a reason to not like Lombardi…..LOL Just kidding….

I say we wait until the 2014 draft and get a fullback. In the mean time I think we could possible get by with what we have.

    • Tom Wynne

that’s the “canned” answer to all Cleveland’s ills every year…lets wait till the next year’s draft…as CB would say…”good grief!!!”

Vickers was great out of college, but at 30 the pounding he has taken has gotten to him. He really just doesn’t have the speed to get out in front on swing plays, or screens. ANd this Browns team is going to run a lot of those plays, if you look at Norv’s history. They need an athletic guy that can pass block, and just plain get out in front and disrupt the defenders angles. TRich can bowl over dudes one on one when they are not coming uniterupted at him… IMO
