When the Cleveland Browns hired G.M. Michael Lombardi, the fans thought here we go again. They could be right. One look at the Browns offensive line on a running play clearly shows the team lacks lead blockers.
The Browns went out a resigned running back Jamaine Cook after Dion Lewis went down with a broken leg. What is Cook going to do to improve the Browns running game? Lombardi should have wnet out and signed free agent Lawrence Vickers who has years opening holes for running backs.
The last time the Browns had a running back that rushed for over 1,000 yard in the season, it was Vickers leading the way. Now with the Browns already having injuries to the key positions on the offensive line, the run blocking could suffer more.
Vickers is a blue-collar player who gets the job done. The Browns should bring Vickers back as an insurance policy for their former number one pick Trent Richardson. Vickers is a NFL veteran who knows how to open holes.
The Browns are passing a golden opportunity to bring in a guy at a discounted rate that could help the team with their running game. Vickers not only opens holes for running backs he is a valuable outlet receiver with great hands coming out of the backfield.
Vickers never puts the ball on the ground. If Lombardi is going to help the Browns, he should start by signing someone who can open holes for the running back. Vickers is that guy and the Browns know it.
The team should bring in Lawrence Vickers and they should do it now before someone else picks up the free agent.
