We have heard it from team President Mike Holmgren, today Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur sent the same message. Brandon Weeden will not be handed the starting quarterback position for the Cleveland Browns. Shurmur said “these guys have played on a competitive level all their lives, they understand it”.
What Shurmur was saying is they just don’t give rookie’s in the NFL the starting job, they have to earn it and they understand the fact they have to earn it. There is hope among Cleveland fans, Weeden will come in and help the Browns to victories. The fact remains, Brandon Weeden has never taken a snap in the NFL, his first pro experience will come this weekend when the Browns hold a rookie camp.
I am not saying Brandon Weeden won’t be the Browns starting quarterback, I am how ever saying Weeden like everyone else is going to have to get the job based on his on field performance. And why not? Why shouldn’t he have to take the job away from Colt McCoy if he is indeed the better quarterback? Lets face it, we don’t know how Brandon Weeden will perform on the field in an NFL game, he has never done it before.
Not only will this be a new experience for Brandon Weeded, it will also be a new experience for head coach Pat Shurmur. This will be the first time as a head coach Shurmur has to make a decision as to who will be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns as a head coach. Lets hope for the teams shake as will as the fans shake Pat Shurmur makes the right choice come the start of the NFL season. The Browns fans have been waiting some patiently and some not so patiently for a winner.
