There are plenty of people wondering why the Cleveland Browns would use Davone Bess as their punt returner, especially after he help the Kansas City Chiefs secure a win last Sunday. The team has others who are capable of filling in for the injured Travis Benjamin while he recuperate from ACL surgery.

Some may even wonder if the team is putting their Bess foot forward, having Bess return the punts. Why not have Fozzy Whittaker handle the entire return game? There once was a time in the NFL when the running backs would handle the returns and play in offensive backfield.

Why does a team need to use a guy who has proven he can’t handle the ball? If Whittaker is handling kick-offs, why not give him a shot at a punt return. It is much the same concept, someone kicks the ball you catch it and then you run your butt off until someone tackles you.

Sure you line up in the end-zone for the kicks and who knows where you line up to catch a punt. The object is pretty much the same. You either call for a fair catch on a punt, or you catch it and run. It isn’t that hard to understand how it works.

The Browns have to make sure they don’t put a guy in the game to handle the punt returns that can cost them a chance of not only a possession, but a win. The football team appears to be better than last season but they need every chance they can get offensively.
